That Blue Wave.

I guess its because blue waves are such  common features in Florida as a result of the numerous beautiful beaches here, why last week's wave that covered most of the USA after the midterm elections, avoided us!

For as an anonymous Floridian declared “I feel like a kid in an orphanage who sees everyone else being adopted except me.”

It’s true, for as one who adopted Florida as my new home for my retiring years, it was quite depressing to see how exuberantly the rest of the USA vehemently rejected Trump and the GOP’s inhumane policies while we in this state are still hanging on to them.

My only comfort from the results on Tuesday night, was the fact that my congressional representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz was the first to be declared winner on November 3rd, with over 78% of the vote cast. This result came in within 10 minutes of the polls being closed.

I  have been observing politics for decades and have never seen an election result declared as decisively and quickly before!

However, when I texted all my friends on hearing the declaration, no one seemed particularly impressed.

What made this landmark most significant for me though, is the fact that my congressional district's representative record, came out of the gerrymandering exercise by Republican Governor Desantis, to maximize Republicans' advantage in the state, as part of the national redistricting battle that President Donald Trump launched ahead of the midterms.

Lest you forgot, earlier this year when Trump saw that there would be a potential swing from his MAGA party in the midterms, he devised a gerrymandering scheme with several of his Governors in red states including Florida and Texas.

(At least the Texans rejected the entire shebang by voting out MAGA!👏👏)

That mid-decade redistricting plan for Florida was signed into law in May 2026, altering 20 of Florida’s 28 U.S. House districts using 2024 presidential results, to alter the state's delegation from a 20–8 Republican majority to a projected 24–4 supermajority.

The Florida Supreme Court allowed the map to remain in place for the midterms.

Among the districts caught in this scam was Districts 25 which had been represented by Wasserman Schultz for years. However, she changed constituency from District 25 to District 20, which had been left vacant since  the resignation of Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. (Mccormick was earlier charged with allegations of ethics violations concerning the use of covid funds.)

Interestingly, despite her expulsion, she tried to run again, being one of around 6 Democrats who challenged Wasserman Schultz for the seat.

Although Florida is regarded as a ruby red state, we the orphans who live in Broward County which is known to be among the most solid democratic counties in the nation, will still have a strong  advocate among the close to 250 Blue Representatives in the House of Congress who are expected to keep Trump in line for the next two years. (if his heart can withstand the rejection for so long!)

So yes, despite the national Blue wave which avoided us in the main,  our glass is still half full.
