Early Thanksgiving

It was like early Thanksgiving, but the fare was even nicer and fit for us queens.

The queens, Michelle, Sonja, Joan, Kadia

This wonderful splash was prepared from start to finish by the creative Kadia, owner of the top-tier Blue Fork LLC, a well-known catering service in New York.

๐Ÿ˜‹ Cheesecake my very favorite

I only met Kadia the master chef, in May while on a cruise. We hit it off immediately when we discovered we were both former Hamptonians.

That's how I managed to get a commitment from her to cook me a super meal for my birthday๐Ÿ˜.

The Hampton posse

There was a logistics problem however, as she lived in New York and I lived in Florida.

Anyway it all came together when her best friend Michelle migrated from New York to Florida.

So this weekend she flew down for the birthday special and made it into a house-warming bash too.

Oxtail

Curried goat

                               Tada.... Pork.

And would you believe cheese cake and creme boulee for desert!  Wow.

The chef extraordinaire

And how could I forget the mannish water we started with๐Ÿ˜‹.

It sure was a fun day (and filling to boot) to remember.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‹

Getting lost

Whenever I visit somewhere new, it takes about two days for me to ketch mi bearings.

After that, I venture out using public transportation.

Syntagma Square is the urban center of Athens and it is very near to our VRBO apartment.

So we learnt how to just walk through the National Gardens to get there.

So all's well. (We thought).

Honestly expected!

The first thing we learnt on the trek to town, is how some people expect everyone to be honest! For we ran into a bunch of souvenir magnets on a board hanging on a tree with a sign bearing the price and inviting buyers to  leave the money on the stool beside the display!

Next, we discovered that the straight street leading to the Marble Stadium, had been transformed into a market overnight.

It closed at 3 pm sharp, everything was  removed and the place cleaned up and cleared for the next day.

This I hear happened every Friday.

Most of the fresh food and vegetables are grown on the adjoining Greek islands.

The metro (subway) where we buy bus tickets, is beautiful, clean and spotless! (It is obvious not too many new Yorkers visit or live in Athens, as theirs is so disgusting.๐Ÿ˜ซ)

Seriously though, American subway  operators need to learn a thing or two about cleanliness!

Some artwork displayed in subway station

Everywhere at the subway station is spotless

We found our way to and from the Archeological Stadium, no problem.

The problem arose when we entered the National Gardens through a different entrance, having no idea the place was  huge and had so many different paths.

That's how come we got lost, for we were .just browsing, not recognizing that night was fast approaching. Sonja and I even got separated and she was the one who had a working GPS๐Ÿ˜ก.

I got separated when Sonja who was overwhelmed by the plants and me, the animals.

Lots of people speak English though, thank heavens.

Interestingly, everyone who hears the Jamaican accent is shocked to learn  that we know about Greece, its Gods and its enthralling mythologies! However while they know of, and love Jamaica, they don't know where it is.

The closest one came was guessing 'it's near to America'๐Ÿ˜Š.

Anyway all were helpful in directing me towards the stadium.

It was on the way there, that I passed what turned out to be the official residence of the President, where I was just in time to get a glimpse of this intriguing scene.

Ever since we arrived in Athens and passed the Parliament building, we had seen hosts of tourists hanging around outside to witness the 'changing of the guards'.

This ritual is done every hour.

People waiting outside to witness the changing of the guards.

Well if I didn't get lost, I wouldn't have seen the spectacle.

Happy I did๐Ÿ˜.

It was fun

The Tamarac Concert series on the Greens, tend to be quite good. Tonight it was Smooth STB band with a tribute to the great Santana.

They are really a Latin band as it's members are from: Puerto Rico, Cuba, Peru, Dom Rep and a few others, though of Latin descent, are from New york.

As usual, our activist Mayor Michelle was on the ground, welcoming the attendees personally.

She is such a people person, I would be shocked if she ever loses an election in Tamarac!

Smooth STB played quite a few of Santana's popular tunes and to tell the truth, once or twice I couldn't just rock in my chair but had to get up and move on the grass๐Ÿ˜.

to

My 93 year old friend Cora caught the vibes too!

It was fun but when they say 7-9 pm, there is no deviation.

Yup. We all enjoyed it.๐Ÿ˜Š

Reparations

It is common for us to assume that all the descendants of the African slave trade have the same history.  However, I have only recently started to learn that as bad as the British were, the Americans were far more savage slavers and for a much longer period.

Slavery was abolished In the USA in 1865 but ours in Jamaica was abolished in 1834 but that’s only a tiny part of the story.

Because the descendants of slave masters have always been in the majority in the USA, they have continued to use legislative power to maintain near-slavish conditions up to, in some cases, recently.

The Gleaner should be highly commended for publishing on May 20, 2022, information re the 500-page document produced in California which outlines the tremendous harm suffered by descendants of enslaved people long after slavery was abolished. These were mainly manifested through discriminatory laws and actions in all facets of life, from housing and education to employment and the legal system.

This report resulted from measures developed at the behest of the slavery Reparations movement in the USA, which lobbied Governor Newsome of California. So, in 2020, he created a two-year task force to investigate and detail California's role in perpetuating discrimination against African Americans.

California is home to approximately 2.8 million blacks and it has the fifth-largest Black population in the US after Texas, Florida, Georgia and New York, the report said. And while African Americans make up less than six per cent of their population, 28 percent of them are in jails, youth detention centers and prisons.

The report concluded that; “Four hundred years of discrimination has resulted in an enormous and persistent wealth gap between Black and white Americans. These effects of slavery continue to be embedded in American society today and have never been sufficiently remedied. The governments of the United States and the State of California have never apologized to or compensated African Americans for these harms.”

Newsom issued a statement praising California for leading the USA in the long overdue discussion of racial justice and equity. The state's Attorney General Rob Bonta, whose office is assisting the task force, said, “California was not a passive actor in perpetuating these harms.”

While the demand for reparations is increasing in the USA and indeed in many former slave societies, California the only place to move ahead with a study and plan. Without an in-depth study however, one city and a few universities in the USA had taken up the issue of their illegal enrichment from slavery. So far, the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, became the first city to make reparations available to Black residents last year and Georgetown University in Washington is the first to have put measures in place to compensate descendants of the slaves they used.

However, the giant step taken by the state of California is a watershed.

The fledgling reparations movement in Jamaica will no doubt be inspired by this bold move in California, although I doubt that our government will be willing to fund any move to study in-depth how slavery has affected our society.

For calls for such action have been made locally and ignored over many years.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the full report out of California which will play a great role in educating the public in general.

It is interesting though that this report has come out in the USA, at a time when several states under Republican control are trying to further hide America’s history of slavery and oppression from the people, with the Governor of Florida even signing legislation to remove information on the topic from text books. If a giant step is not therefore taken by the current US administration to deal speedily and effectively with the issue of reparations, despite the best efforts of people like Governor Newsome, the movement will surely be set back for another few decades if a new Republican administration takes over in 2024.

OF ATLANTIC CITY AND LESBIANS

After seeing how hurricane Sandy had devastated Atlantic city, I had the urge to go see for myself what it looks like now, since I had seen ads saying they were again open for business. Although I am too much of a cheap stake to gamble, the fact that the casinos give back a large proportion of the greyhound bus fare in cash in the hope passengers will gamble in their hotel, spurred me even more to take the two hour trip.

However, if these casino owners had more people like me, they would go bankrupt, for the last time I went there I got back my full $22 in cash and only gambled $5. This time I noticed that they only gave back $25 of the $37 fare, but what the heck.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how normal the place looked, no sign of the devastation less than  a year ago. It seems to me too that they have brought in a whole pile of white sand, (the sand looked grey the last time I was there) probably from Guyana which has an over- abundance of white sand which they export to as far as South Africa.

What was really great too was seeing Red Stripe beer billboards on the along the boardwalk, although the signs made no mention of Jamaica anywhere.

Anyway, the rest of the world does not seem to be aware that they are back in business as the numbers were really low with the majority seeming to be older retired folk many with walking sticks and other walking aids. But I guess that is normal as it was a Tuesday when most younger people would be at work.

The casinos and hotels are really fabulous and because Donald Trump is such a prig, I hate to admit it but the Trump hotel complex was really the nicest.

So they are back in business but it still remains a secret!

On the return to New York I had to go to Times Square as it is really one of my favorite places in the world and although I know everything goes in New York, I really was not prepared for this.

Two black lesbians in the middle of the street topless and feeling up each other.

Ugh, disgusting and all this while young kids and families were around in abundance.
